Livin' in the Big City: Introduction and Assignment
In order to experience what it would be like to really live in New York City, students were required to work as groups and navigate specific neighborhoods in New York City. To make the experience more life-like, each group had two kids, one age 8 and one age 15. One group was sent to the Kings Highway area of Brooklyn, and the other was sent to Mcdonald Avenue in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. A list of objectives was given to each group.
The first objective was to take the subway from the students’ hotel to their “Potential New Home." They were given an address, but no directions to their new home. From their new home, students were required to drop the 8 year old off at their elementary school and the other off at their high school. Students recorded how long it took to drop off both children, and to make it to the nearest subway line. After those objectives were completed, photographs of the nearest playground, bank, grocery store, pharmacy and liquor store were taken. Each group ate breakfast at a local restaurant in order to become more familiar with their area.
The last objective of this assignment was to record how long it too for each group to ride the subway from their neighborhood to their job. The students worked for the New York City Police Department and their station was located at 311 West 54th Street in Manhattan.
