Census Data
In addition to the field and zoning data, information from the U.S. Census's American Factfinder website offered the opportunity to compare the income, employment, ethnic and housing variables over the last decade. To analyze the urban impact of the High Line and to determine whether or not gentrification followed its construction, 2010 data was compared to 2000 data. According to Marcuse's definition of gentrification, one would expect to find increasing household income and a transition to professional, quaternary industries from working class, secondary industries. Also, given the inequities of racial earnings in the United States, gentrification often has the potential to displace particular ethnicities; therefore, one might expect a change in the racial composition of the neighborhoods surrounding the High Line.
